Struggling with English pronunciation?
Here ́s a good exercise to help students practice and compare the Y (as in Yes) sound to the DG sound (as in Joe).
Hi everyone! I just made this video about the differences between Y (yellow) and J (judge).
And here´s the list I used in the video:
Exercise for the differences between the “Yes” and “Jess” sounds
yes | Jess | your | job |
yet | jet | year | jeer |
yolk | Joke | yacht | jot |
yellow | Jello | yak | Jack |
yam | jam | yell | gel |
young | Joe | Yeti | jetty |
your | jaw | yob | job |
yesterday | Jay | yay | joy |
Yale | jail | yahoo | jazz |
yucky | jeans | yoga | jerk |
Tongue twister with these sounds:
Young, gentle John was envious of jolly Yally, the mayor, for his giant yacht, so John
watched Yally for a year, over bridges, through canyons, and beyond. John became
educated on Yally’s allergy of yolk, so he put yellow yolk in his juice and yogurt. Yally
drank the juice and yogurt and yelled, “Yuck!” but then he injected himself with a
major shot, did some yoga and was jolly. John’s behavior was a failure so he figured
he would schedule a session with a shrink named June. Her opinion was John’s
coyote like reality was no joke, thus assigning him to a judicious psychological
pharmacology for ages. Source: https://idoc.pub/
