How Important is Tutoring?
The current state of tutoring in America.
As I was doing some research today, I found this informative industry newsletter published a couple of days ago, called “The State of Tutoring in America”. If the hyperlink doesn’t work, click here:
The info contained in the newsletter only affirmed what I have experienced as a private tutor who mainly works with students in the US.
Let’s look at just a few statistics:
The Teacher Shortage Connection
Crisis in the Classroom
The tutoring industry's growth is intertwined with America's teacher shortage crisis:
Vacant Positions: At least 55,000 vacant positions and 270,000 teaching posts currently filled by underqualified teachers
Burnout Rates: 36% of middle and high school teachers said burnout and mental health issues were among their top challenges going into 2025
California Example: More than 10,000 unfilled teacher positions in 2025, and more than 32,000 positions filled by those who are not fully certified
Let me tell you about a few Spanish students I worked with during the 2024-2025 school year:
A teenage student from Texas had signed up for a Spanish (from Spain) History class that he was not ready for. I worked with him during the summer months and part of the fall season. He lacked even basic vocabulary, verb knowledge and other fundamentals.
"Knowledgeable and patient tutor"
-Trey Houston, TX on 5/28/2024
Kimberlee has been a huge help for my 8th grader taking Spanish II and soon to start Spanish III. His 1st year is Spanish was a disaster as the teacher quit the first week and the district ended up going online only with a revolving teacher. Needless to say, he did not learn much of anything the first year. We started with her during the second semester of Spanish II and she proactively identified his weaknesses from his 1st year and then started progressing with more current material. His grades have improved significantly with minimal work from me organizing his sessions. She works well with my son and has adjusted her style to match what works best for my son. They have already started on Spanish III and the plan is to finish it over the summer. Kimberlee is a very patient teacher, and we appreciate her help and look forward to this summer.
Cierra V. had taken the same college Spanish class at Pepperdine University and could not seem to pass it; moreover, it was a requirement for her to graduate. She and I worked so hard and strengthened the fundamentals as well as her Spanish 3 skills. It wasn’t easy, but in the end, this is what happened:
June 26, 2025. “It is with deep gratitude that I recommend Kimberlee Dianne as an exceptional tutor. Kimberlee was truly the best tutor one could hope for—her support was instrumental in helping me pass my required Spanish course and ultimately graduate.
Through every challenge, she patiently guided me, helping me better understand the material. She never rushed a session and always took the time to ensure I fully grasped each concept. Her dedication, compassion, and genuine care for her students set her apart.
I truly could not recommend Kimberlee enough. Her impact on my academic journey was profound, and I am so thankful to have had her in my corner.”
David from Roseville, California, truly struggled with Spanish, and I believe I taught him the verb “gustar” (to like) for almost two months. In the end, after much work, his mother provided this tutor review on July 10, 2025:
“When we first met Kimberlee about four years ago, my son was struggling significantly in his Spanish class, which was a source of great distress for our family. She took the time to listen to our concerns and worked closely with my son to address his challenges. She exhibited a remarkable blend of patience, kindness, and firmness, establishing clear boundaries that fostered a productive learning environment.
As a result of her guidance, my son began to look forward to his Spanish classes. He became so enthusiastic about the subject that he expressed a desire to continue attending classes even while on vacation. Today, I am proud to say that he has excelled and is now an honors student in Spanish.
Kimberlee is a dedicated teacher who pursues her role out of passion rather than for monetary gain. We are immensely grateful for her support and guidance. Our family highly recommends her, and we truly appreciate all that she has done for us!”
