Back to School 2025 (Ed. 3)

Some school idioms to get you started!

August marks a special month for many, as students in the northern hemisphere of this beautiful world return to school. However, my son, who is heading into his senior year of high school, does not go back to school until September 1st.

As a seasoned ESL tutor, I love teaching idioms! What, may you ask, are idioms?

Idiom definition: An idiom is a figure of speech established by usage that has a meaning not necessarily deductible from those of the individual words.

What is an Idiom?

Idioms are a type of figurative language, which means they are not always meant to be taken literally. Idioms express a particular sentiment, but they do not literally mean what the individual words themselves mean.

An idiom is a saying that is specific to a language. For example, an idiom in English does not translate to an idiom in Spanish.

Idiom Example

  • The grass is always greener on the other side.

This idiom does not literally mean that the “other side” will always have greener grass. There may not even be a literal “other side” to the subject at hand—or grass for that matter.

The meaning of this idiom is that people think the other person, or someone in a different situation, has it better, or easier, than they do.

A final thought I found recently on the Internet:

We should NOT ask our students why they are late first thing in the morning! 3rd graders can't drive, and 7th graders can't help that their Mom has to has to drop off their younger siblings at daycare and elementary school before dropping them off last. 10th graders don't want to tell you that they had to find a ride because they don't have an adult in their house who can drive them to school, and they missed the bus.

We tell these children we are HAPPY THEY ARE AT SCHOOL.

We have become so disconnected from the children, teens, and young adults that we teach, mentor, and even coach that we assume they all live great and perfect lives.

Many of them are just trying to survive. BE NICE.

🎊LET'S HAVE A GREAT SCHOOL YEAR🎊

KEEP LIVING!! AMEN 🙏🏼
