Back to School 2025 (Ed. 2)

As I was thinking about what to include in this week’s newsletter, the word “flourish” came to mind. Anyone who has ever worked with me as their ESL tutor knows that I use the website wordreference.com regularly. The first two definitions on WordReference.com are these:

flour•ish /ˈflɜrɪʃ, ˈflʌr-/ v. 

1. to be in a vigorous state;
   thrive: a period in which art flourished.

2. to be successful;
   prosper: The business was flourishing.

In Spanish, the verb is “florecer”, which means to “flower”, “blossom”, or “grow”. Another synonym could be “bloom” or “prosper”.

What does “flourish”, “blossom”, or “grow” have to do with tutoring?
